Hernias develop when the abdominal wall is weakened. Anyone can get hernias: men, women, children, and even babies. When the muscles are weakened, the inner lining of the abdomen can work its way through the weak spot, forming a sac where tissue can gather and form a bulge. The bulge can be noticeable under the skin and cause pain. Hernias may occur at any area of the abdominal wall and are typically named for the location where it presents itself. Femoral hernias are located in the groin area where the femoral artery, nerve and vein join the thigh, leaving the abdomen. Women are more likely to suffer this type of hernia injury due to the location, and the hernia will present itself mid-thigh and tend not to be reducible, meaning, they cannot be pushed back in. While rare, femoral hernias require immediate attention before tissue loses blood supply and dies.

Femoral hernias do not always have a clear cause, though generally, hernias can be caused by chronic cough or constipation, obesity, or heavy lifting. Femoral hernias can also be due to congenital weakness present from birth. Femoral hernias may not have any symptoms except for some discomfort in the groin or a visible bulge in the upper thigh. If a person experiences sudden sharp pain in the groin or abdomen, nausea and vomiting, this could be a sign of a strangulated hernia requiring immediate medical treatment, likely surgery. Strangulated hernias are those that cut off the blood supply to the protruding tissue and cause tissue death. Consulting with a health provider if any of these symptoms appear is critical to resolve the hernia because hernias do not resolve themselves without intervention.

Repairing a femoral hernia is done through an open incision surgery or a laparoscopic method. Open surgery requires an incision in the groin area and the surgeon will push the tissue back into place before reinforcing the abdominal wall with surgical mesh. With laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon inserts a small tube with camera into the abdomen and uses several small incisions to repair the hernia, similarly to the have been results of increased recurrence and complications.

General risks for surgery include bleeding, blood clots, infection, breathing difficulties, or reactions to medicines used. Specifically related to femoral hernia repair, patients should be mindful of potential damage to blood vessels, nerves, or reproductive organs (in women), chronic pain, or recurrence of the hernia. There have also been numerous reports of complications related to hernia mesh. These risks include protrusion of mesh, pain, infection, bleeding, autoimmune reactions, organ perforation or obstructions, and adhesions.
