Surgical mesh is used to support weak or damaged tissue and is typically made from synthetic material, but increasingly, manufacturers are experimenting with more and more biological meshes and coatings.  Surgical mesh is commonly used in hernia procedures or to repair pelvic organ prolapse. While the mesh may repair the issue at hand, there are significant risks associated with surgical mesh.  These risks include protrusion of mesh, pain, infection, bleeding, autoimmune reactions, organ perforation or obstructions, and adhesions. In order to treat the complications or remove the mesh, additional surgeries and hospitalizations may be required.  Because some surgical mesh is intended to remain in the body permanently, it can be very difficult to remove.

Tissue grows around the mesh and it must be removed little by little. Often, mesh removal is the only method to truly resolve the complications created, however it may be impossible to remove all of the mesh and even with total mesh removal, the complications may not be resolved.  Fistulas and scarring can form after mesh removal causing both pelvic and nerve pain.  Mesh design has been found to lead to adhesions, bowel obstructions, or bowel perforations. There can also be an increased rate of infection in patients who have had their hernia repaired using mesh. Fortunately, many infections can be resolved with medication, without need for surgical intervention. Because a high percentage of hernia repairs involve mesh, it is significant that many of the infection risk can be easily resolved. A 2016 study demonstrated that there is an association between MRSA infections and hernia repairs.

In fact, 31 percent of patients experienced infections at the surgical site within two years of surgery. In 2015, a study showed that 10 percent of hernia mesh patients suffered infection within 20 days of surgery. Other risks that have been noted are:  hernia recurrence, seroma, or mesh migration.  Despite the risks associated with hernia mesh, it is used in 90% of all hernia repair procedures. With advances in technology and research constantly underway there are more and safer options available that address issues related to biocompatibility and other complications. Recovery from surgery using mesh rather than a non-mesh method is typically shorter as well. When planning hernia repair surgery, or any other procedure that will use mesh, it is important to discuss all options and complications with your doctors. The possibility of a complication and the certainty of a complication are not the same thing. Being informed can help you and your medical team assess the options and your situation and make the best decision for you that will lead to successful recovery.
